Description

In 1818 Robert Beaty and John Carroll purchased several acres of land surrounding a large spring. They divided the land into lots and donated someof the land for public buildings and a cemetery. Beaty built his home on a section of the land in 1826. The home became known the Beaty-Mason home when Glorvinia Beaty married John Richardson Mason and inherited the home. The home remained in the Mason family and eventually was owned by Miss Mary Mason. After her death, Edmond Peter Garrett inherited the house then sold it in 1961 to Athens College for use as a home for the presidents of the campus.
