Description
The Athens Post of July 1880 noted that the Donnell place had become the property of the city and was used as a Male College. By October, sixty elementary and high school students had enrolled for classes. The different courses offered were math, natural science, English, German, French, and a complete commercial course in typing. A search for property to locate an agricultural experimental school was launched in June 1889. Athens was chosen after being the highest bidder of 15 possible places in North Alabama, offering $14,800 in cash and land. Athens was one of two pioneer agricultural schools in the State. It was established by legislative act in 1888-1889 and was known as the North Alabama Agricultural School. When the school ceased operation in 1937, the property was returned to the city board and was established as Athens High School on North Madison Street.
