Description
In the late 1820s James Edmonds Saunders established Rocky Hill plantation in Courtland, Alabama. Between 1858 and 1861, the plantation owner had the Rocky Hill Castle constructed. The two-story stuccoed brick eclectic home contained elements of Greek Revival architecture, including porticos on the front and rear and Italianate bracketing. The home also contained a turreted Gothic tower on the west side of the home. The tower may have been used to house slaves and then servants. Like many plantation homes, Rocky Hill had a raised basement. In 1961, the home had to be demolished after years of neglect had led it to deteriorate.
