In May 1862, one particular event would scar the citizens of Athens. After Union troops celebrated their victory at Shiloh, the federal Army of Ohio pushed further into the Confederacy. The troops seized the Charleston and Memphis Railroad. Citizens in northern Alabama were shocked at the occupation of Union troops. On May 2, 1862 Union forces under the command of Col. John Basil Turchin seized Athens. Once Athens fell to the Union, Turchin told his men: “I shut my eyes for two hours. I see nothing.” Union soldiers attacked businesses, plundered private homes, and assaulted many of the citizens. Damage to the town was estimated at $55,000. This traumatic event became known as the Rape of Athens. The school was first located in the old Masonic Building. By September 1912 the school had relocated to Westmoreland Hall where classes there reached forty students. Other teachers who joined the faculty included Nonie Chandler and Myrtle McGuire. By 1918, the school had nearly eighty pupils enrolled. Athens residents purchased property from Mr. S. A. Davis and constructed a building for the school. The Athens Preparatory School opened its new building on East Bryan Street in September the following year. The school closed in 1922 when only forty students registered. They divided the land into lots and donated someof the land for public buildings and a cemetery. Beaty built his home on a section of the land in 1826. The home became known the Beaty-Mason home when Glorvinia Beaty married John Richardson Mason and inherited the home. The home remained in the Mason family and eventually was owned by Miss Mary Mason. After her death, Edmond Peter Garrett inherited the house then sold it in 1961 to Athens College for use as a home for the presidents of the campus. By October, sixty elementary and high school students had enrolled for classes. The different courses offered were math, natural science, English, German, French, and a complete commercial course in typing. A search for property to locate an agricultural experimental school was launched in June 1889. Athens was chosen after being the highest bidder of 15 possible places in North Alabama, offering $14,800 in cash and land. Athens was one of two pioneer agricultural schools in the State. It was established by legislative act in 1888-1889 and was known as the North Alabama Agricultural School. When the school ceased operation in 1937, the property was returned to the city board and was established as Athens High School on North Madison Street. Wheeler was a West Point graduate, a leader of the Confederate Calvary, a U.S. Congressman, and a Spanish-American War hero. Among the historic structures on the property are three dwellings from three different periods: an early "dogtrot" log cabin, an antebellum plantation residence, and the present main house built after the Civil War. The site also contains three cemeteries, a log barn, and an ice house with a stone-lined cellar. Wheeler's daughter, Annie, lived on the plantation until her death in 1955. It remained in the Wheeler family until 1993, when it was donated by them to the state of Alabama and the Alabama Historical Commission. The area was registered as a National Landmark by the National Park Service in May 1974. Dismal Canyons contains a variety of species and trees. Kitchen and Stove Pipe is a natural stovepipe through huge rock formations and was used by the Chickasaw Indians as a campground and ceremonial area. The gorge has insects called dismalites, which are rare insects that produce a bright blue-green light to attract food and mates. In 1889 there was no facility in the city for a theater or public meeting hall. On September 16, 1889, the Cotaco Opera House Company was incorporated. Completed in 1890, the opera house was the social center of the community. Films and musicals could be seen at the opera house. The Rising Sun Masonic Lodge purchased the building in the 1920s and converted it into a meeting hall. The Cotaco Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Title A name given to the resource Overton Farm Subject The topic of the resource Franklin County, Hodges, Farm, Overton Farm, National Register Description An account of the resource Overton Farm is one of the earliest remaining pioneer sites in Northwest Alabama. The farm is located four miles northwest of Hodges. Abner Overton, who was a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, visited Alabama in 1815. During his visit to Alabama, he peddled tobacco. He returned in 1817 to discover 160 acres of rich soil near Bear Creek. He registered the land in Pontitoc, Mississippi, sold his wagon and built a shed. He married Judy May in 1819 and began construction on a one-room log cabin. Abner died in 1877 a year after his wife died. The house was then passed to their children and other family members until 1946. The farm was restored by the Northwest Alabama State Junior College in the 1970s and was used as an educational center until 2013. In 1973, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Title A name given to the resource Cedar Creek Furnace (Alabama Iron Works) Subject The topic of the resource Franklin County, Russellville, Cedar Creek Furnace Description An account of the resource Cedar Creek Furnace is a blast furnace located on a site near Russellville, Alabama. Joseph Heslip, a native of Pennsylvania, acquired the property around 1811 and used slave labor to construct the furnace. In 1820, a cholera outbreak killed Heslip and many of the furnace operators. In November 1825, the site was put up for auction and was purchased by Aaron Wells. Like Heslip, Wells was an ironmaker and operated the site for two years before he sold it to Robert Napier. From 1832 to 1836, the furnace operated until the creek near the site flooded. The floodwater extinguished the furnace and hardened the metal, making the furnace useless. Cedar Creek Furnace was the first iron ore furnaces in Alabama. It is one of the earliest examples of a Tidewater-type cottage. Constructed in 1830 by the Dandridge family, the house was developed with a double-square formula that was used by colonial Virginia house builders. There was a separate brick kitchen that stood close to the rear of the house. In 1907, the house and surrounding farm became known as Sunnybrook. Title A name given to the resource Old State Bank Subject The topic of the resource Morgan County, Decatur, Banks, Old State Bank Description An account of the resource Constructed in 1833, the Old State Bank in Decatur, Alabama, served as the Decatur Branch of the State Bank of Alabama. The Alabama General Assembly passed legislation to create the State Bank of Alabama in 1830. Formed in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, the bank would have additional branches in Decatur and Mobile. Construction of the bank began the same year, despite the controversy of Decatur being chosen as one of the sites with only 200 residents. The benefit of being close to the Tennessee River helped change that. The bank was designed in the Jeffersonian style with a price of $10,000. Much of the construction was done by enslaved workers from James Fennell's plantation. The bank opened up for business on July 29, 1833, but unfortunately accumulated a debt of more than $1 million dollars by 1840. It remained empty until it was occupied by Federal troops in 1861. The bank served as a headquarters, storehouse, and a field hospital. The thick walls protected most of the soldiers from different forms of projectiles. After the Civil War, the bank served multiple purposes for the citizens of Decatur. It was a doctor's office and a residence. The bank was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It was donated by the American Legion, Post No. 15, to the City of Decatur and became a museum in 1984. The Old State Bank is located at 952 Bank Street NE, in Decatur. Title A name given to the resource Athens Female Academy / Athens State University Subject The topic of the resource Education; Athens State University; Athens, AL; Limestone County, AL Description An account of the resource The city of Athens was founded in 1818 by Robert Beaty and associates, and shortly afterward these same founders persuaded Judge John McKinley to give the land for a female academy. They then recruited Daniel Perrin Bestor of Connecticut to preside over it. In 1822, they obtained a charter from the new legislature of the state of Alabama. During the first few decades, Athens Female Academy's presidents were Baptist, Presbyterian, or Methodist ministers. In 1842 the Methodist conference voted to accept the academy, and local supporters built Founder's Hall. The first president, Reverend Richard Henderson Rivers revised the curriculum, giving the collegiate degree a more regular status, while maintaining elementary through secondary levels. Madame Jane Hamilton Childs, who was president before, during, and after the Civil War, was one of the college's most unique presidents. She not only furnished the campus elegantly and turned out excellent female graduates, she also kept the college open during the war and prevented occupying Federal troops from coming onto the campus. Two women have presided over the college - Madame Childs for eleven years and Mary Norman Moore McCoy, two terms for a total of seventeen years. In 1908, President Moore oversaw the elimination of the elementary level, the establishment of Rivers Hall as the secondary level, and the national recognition of Athens Female College. In the 1930s President E.R. Naylor began admitting male students and obtained a name change to Athens College. He also oversaw the creation of a work/study program for students in the area during the Depression. In 1975, the Methodist conference gave the college and its property to the State of Alabama. The state recreated it as a degree-granting upper-division college, the only one of its kind in the state. Students complete their junior and senior years at Athens State. In 1998, Athens State College's name was changed to Athens State University. Bowen Company Subject The topic of the resource Business; Athens, AL; Limestone County, AL Description An account of the resource Samuel M. Bowen owned several businesses around Athens, Alabama. He operated Yarbrough Brothers and Bowen 5, 10, and 25 Cent Store in 1909. In 1913 he operated Lerman and Bowen, located on the north side of the square where Cluxton's Jewelry is now. In 1914 he operated Lerman and Bowen Grocery. In 1919 he operated Bowen and Johnson Shoes, Grocery, and Hardware, eventually partnering with John Caine. He later expanded his business to include appliances and then furniture. The last store, Sam M. Bowen Company was located on the West side of the Square where the Rogers Center is located. He operated the business with his son-in-law, Jim Burke King. Records preserved at the archives include those of the Circuit Court, Probate Court, Board of Registrars, Tax Assessor, County Commission, and Board of Education. The Archives also contains historical and genealogical material that deals with Northern Alabama and the Southern Tennessee Region. It also contains personal family histories, family photographs, and microfilmed newspapers. Limestone County purchased the 1905 L&N Depot in 2004 and remolded it to house the Archives today.
