Harper, Alabama Confederacy, Auburn Heritage Association Description An account of the resource Pine Hill is the oldest cemetery in Auburn and was established in 1837. Auburn’s founder, Judge John J. Harper, donated six acres to be used a community burial ground for white settlers and their slaves. The oldest marked graves are dated 1938. There are no early cemetery records. The first survey was conducted in in the 1950’s and over 1,100 graves were cataloged. Of those, only one grave belong to a black individual. People who have been interred at Pine Hill include slaves and university presidents. For decades, Pine Hill was the main burial ground for local whites. Auburn’s confederate marker is at the rear of the cemetery standing over 98 common graves of Texas soldiers who died in a temporary hospital. Before 1995, Pine Hill was neglected and vandalized until the Auburn Heritage Association began to restore the cemetery. In 1978, Pine Hill was placed on the Alabama Register and is currently owned by the City of Auburn. Erected in 1870, the church was located on land donated by a white man, Lonnie Payne. The impressive church gave the local area the name “Baptist Hill”. The church also has claims to the nearby cemetery, Baptist Hill Cemetery, which was the first separate black community cemetery in Auburn. Members of the church were the first buried in the cemetery; however, currently members of other churches have been interred there. Title A name given to the resource Baptist Hill Cemetery Subject The topic of the resource Lee County, Auburn, Baptist, Cemetery, African American Description An account of the resource Baptist Hill cemetery is a part of Alabama’s first separate black community and is a critical part of Auburn’s black history. According to oral history, a white man gave most of the land in the 1870’s. Currently the cemetery is four acres and has over 500 marked graves and many unmarked. The oldest grave dates back to 1879. Many of the buried at the cemetery were born into slavery but later became teachers or people in business. The cemetery gets its name from the Ebenezer Baptist Church close by. The text on side one reads: "The Karsner ~ Kennedy House is significant because of its architectural characteristics. Benjamin F. Karsner (1800-1867) of Maryland married Sarah Carter of Virginia in 1827. He was a prominent figure in Florence and at times he was a Justice of the Peace, Tax Assessor, and Commission Merchant. The Karsner home was constructed from 1828 to 1831. The two-story Federal Style cottage, uncommon to this area, was situated on lot No. 7 according to the original plat of Florence is drawn by the Cyprus Land Company. The house had 13-inch brick load-bearing exterior walls, broad pine plank floors and wood ceilings and roof framing. The main chimney was an integral part of the wall and not projected on the exterior. Other structures at the site included a smokehouse, root cellar, and cistern. The Karsner house was remodeled several times before a complete restoration to the original style in the early 1970s. In all modifications, the original structure of brick and wood remained basically unchanged. After Mr. Karsner’s death in 1868, Mrs. Karsner remained in the house until her death in 1880. The Karsner family sold the house to Mary Fannie Hudson and it was used as residential rental property." The text on side two reads: "In 1907, Dr. George W. Carroll purchased the property. A few years thereafter, the house became the property of his oldest daughter Bertha Carroll, and her husband, Oscar Y. Kennedy. Under the supervision of Karl Tyree, Jr., executive director of the Housing Authority, the history of the house was carefully researched after which the structure was restored in 1971 – 1973 to its original style and condition. It became an addition to the Housing Authority’s central office. From this location, Tyree coordinated numerous major urban development projects in Florence. Throughout its long history, the Karsner ~ Kennedy House has stood as one of the finest examples of Federal Style domestic architecture in the Tennessee Valley. Born May 1, 1780 in Culpepper County, Virginia, he died July 19, 1852 and is buried in Louisville, Kentucky. McKinley was an early setter of Huntsville, Alabama and resided in the Howard Weeden Home. As a member of the Cypress Land Company, he was one of the seven founders of Florence in 1818. McKinley helped establish one of Florence's first schools and its first church. Text on the marker reads: "This is the highest domiciliary mound in the Tennessee Valley. It was build about 1200 to 1500 A.D. by Indians of the Mississippian Culture. Such mounds served as bases for ceremonial temples or chief's houses. This one was originally encircled by an earthen wall, and there were villages and cultivated fields nearby. The text on the marker reads: "The home of Homer Givens, America's first hero in World War I was located .4 of a mile north of this intersection. Following a bloody two-hour battle on November 1, 1917 Corporal Givens stood alone after his comrades had fallen. He then managed to kill three enemy soldiers before being severely wounded by twenty-three pieces of shrapnel. Givens was decorated with France's highest military honor, the Croix De Guerre, His award ceremony was attended by General John J Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces." The text on side one of the marker reads: "The settlement of what is now eastern Lauderdale County (known as “Over Elk”) by non-Native Americans commenced by 1807. Federal land sales were held in Huntsville during the spring of 1818. Although much of the land was described as a “howling wilderness,” there was a rush to buy. Records of these sales show purchasers were Samuel Burney, Andrew Rodgers, Archibald Fuqua and dozens more. Andrew Rodgers bought 79 acres in what became the downtown business district and as a trading center, the village became known as Rodgersville. Businesses were set up at this site because of the three thoroughfares that intersected. One followed an old Indian trail which extended from what is now Florence to present-day Huntsville - this became U.S. Highway 72. Another led to a shallow ford across Elk River - this road is now called Snake Road. The third was between Giles County, Tennessee and the Tennessee River - it was the route known today as Lamb’s Ferry Road. Heritage Park was built at the SW corner of this intersection." The text on side two reads: "Worship services by non-native settlers were recorded to have been first held at a brush arbor one half mile to the west, at the site now known as Liberty Cemetery, during 1818. By 1828, Rodgersville had numerous general merchandise stores, blacksmith shops, saddle and harness makers, a stagecoach inn/tavern and more. During the 1900s, the U.S. Post Office Department dropped the “d”…changing Rodgersville to Rogersville. Researchers have not been able to determine why this was done. It is apparent to see that the earlier settlers “could not have selected a more correct spot had they been able to rise about the thickly wooded acres and view from above the beautiful Elk River joining the mighty Tennessee and meandering towards its northern union with the Ohio.” 2008 marked the 150th Anniversary of Incorporation for Rogersville as a municipality, but Rogersville’s history goes back to ancient times when native people and their prehistoric ancestors thrived in the region due to the rivers, creeks and abundant wildlife." Born September 10, 1836, in Augusta, Georgia, Joseph Wheeler graduated from West Point in 1859, and was commissioned A 2nd Lt., U.S. Army. In 1861, he resigned his commission and offered his services to the Confederate States of America. His devotion to duty and tireless efforts resulted in rapid promotion from 1st Lt. to Colonel of the 19th Alabama Inf., to command of the Cavalry of the Army of the Mississippi, with the rank of Brigadier Gen., by July 1862. At age 27, Fighting Joe" Wheeler was promoted Major Gen. and given command of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Tennessee. He was constantly engaged in battle, wounded 3 times, and had 16 horses shot from under him. He was promoted to Lt. Gen. on February 28, 1865. Following the War Between the States, Wheeler married and settles in Alabama. He was elected to the House of Representatives ten times by the people of the eight districts and served with distinction. Because of his Allegiance to the country, Wheeler's offer of military service in the war with Spain resulted in a commission as Major General Commanding the U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. He fought in Cuba and in the Philippines. He retired as a Brigadier Gen. of the Regular Army on September 10, 1900. Wheeler died on February 25, 1906, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Rowe Description An account of the resource Southeastern Bible College (SBC) was organized in 1933 as a four-year, nondenominational, evangelical institution. The school was created by northern fundamentalists as a training school in Christian ministry. Classes began in October 1934. Originally the college served Baptist and Presbyterian congregations but eventually spread to several independent churches. In 1927 Southern Baptist Edgar J. Rowe, his wife, and several friends attended a Bible conference led by fundamentalist teacher Harry A. Ironside. He inspired them to launch a Baptist institution in Birmingham. Rowe investigated the structure of schools and in 1933 wrote a prospectus to approximately 30 local pastors and laymen. With their support, Rowe laid the foundation for the SBC. Currently all SBC graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Bible and theology. The Department of Education also offers a dual major in Biblical studies and elementary education. The text on side one reads: "The United States flag that flies at the base of this hill stands as a sentry over the site that was the home of Fort Willingham Armory from 1937-1979. The Armory was named after Dr. Henry J. Willingham, president of Florence State Normal School, and later, Florence State Teachers College for 25 years. In addition to its military functions, the Armory also served as the focal point for community sporting events and social gatherings. In 1935, an extensive building program was inaugurated by the State of Alabama, the Adjutant General's Office, and the Works Progress Administration for the construction of an armory for each National Guard unit in the State. For Governor Bibb Graves, Adjutant General John C. Coleman, and many National Guardsmen, the building program was a dream come true. The cost of construction for 32 armories exceeded two million dollars. Fort Willingham Armory cost $31,110. The Armory was razed in January 1981. The text on side one of the marker reads: "Side 1: The Forks of Cypress plantation was established in 1818 by James and Sarah Jackson. Its home, believed the design of William Nichols, was one of Alabama's great houses, featuring perhaps the earliest peristyle colonnade in America. Built by skilled African-American artisans in slavery. The Forks stood until June 6, 1966, when it was struck by lighting and burned to the ground. Its surrounding brick porch with twenty-three brick columns-once plastered with a mix of lime, horsehair and molasses and topped by cypress Ionic capitals-remains on limestone foundations. Irish-born James Jackson, engineer, turfman, merchant, financier, planter, statesman, member of the Cypress Land Company, was a founding father of Florence. He was the major figure in establishing the local textile industry. As President of the Alabama Senate, he was its key advocate of the 1832 Treaty of Cusetta." The text on the marker reads: "Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this tower of native stone was completed in 1890 as the foundation for a wrought- iron tank with a capacity of 280,000 gallons of water. It is 70 feet high and is located on the highest elevation in the city. Water was pumped here from Cypress Creek. It was constructed during the Industrial Boom at which time the population of Florence increased from approximately 2,000 in 1887 to over 6,000 in 1889. Title A name given to the resource Spring Hill College Subject The topic of the resource Religion, Catholicism, Catholic, Bishop Michael Portier, Mobile County, Mobile, Education, College, American Civil War, Desegregation, Martin Luther King Jr., “Letter from the Birmingham Jail” Description An account of the resource In 1830, Spring Hill College was founded by Mobile’s first catholic bishop. Originally most of the students were male from wealthy families in the Mobile, Pensacola, and New Orleans areas. However most of the students were not catholic. In 1954, Spring Hill College was the first college to desegregate in the Deep South. Bishop Michael Portier originally intended for it to be a boarding school that housed students under the age of 12. However the age restriction was soon relaxed and by 1832 there were almost 130 students. During the American Civil War, high officers of the Confederacy sheltered their sons from the draft at Spring Hill. Eventually the college formed two military companies. After the war, Spring Hill recruited among sons of Central American and Cuban leaders. Latin American culture was introduced to the mostly American student body. In the 1920’s the school expanded to include high school ages, yet the high school was closed in 1935. In 1932, the college opened Saturday classes for adults and began admitting women. The first two women, Marie Fidelis Yeend and Genevieve Cordilia Jarvis, graduated in 1937. In 1953 was the hiring of the first full-time female faculty member, Ella Morris, who lectured in biology. The school desegregated the following year, and in 1956, Fannie Motley became the first black graduate of a previously white college in Alabama. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote about Spring Hill in his “Letter from the Birmingham jail” mentioning the school’s moral significance. Currently the school has a diverse student body with approximately 1.450 students. The school offers degrees in the liberal arts along with master’s programs in business, education, nursing, and theological studies. However as the community grew, it consolidated and purchased to houses in Huntsville to practice their faith. Around 1990-1991, 1645 Sparkman Drive was purchased and the current Huntsville Islamic Center was built. Now the center has a gymnasium, meeting rooms, and a community hall. It is also credited to teach school up to eighth grade. The Huntsville Islamic Center practices Sunni Islam but those who practice Shi’a are also welcome to worship at the center. The function of the center is to serve the religious, educational, and social needs of the community. It also promotes good citizenship, social justice, and good relations with other communities. One of the most important functions of the community is outreach efforts into the general community and also countering islamophobia through education and dialogue. The Islamic community in Huntsville is ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse. Muslims are converts and immigrants that go on to a variety of careers with one universal identifying faith. The Huntsville Islamic Center would like everyone to know that they believe in one God. At the center they enjoy the freedom to worship with the First Amendment and now feel they are truly an integral part of the Huntsville community. The text on side one reads: "The Cypress Land Company reserved this block for education purposes. In 1847 the Florence Female Academy, consisting of two buildings, was established. The Academy was soon in financial trouble Despite a $20,000 contribution from the City of Florence. the Academy ceased operation in the early 1850's. At the request of the City, the Academy Board of Trustees turned the land and building over to the Presbyterian Synod of Nashville on November 25, 1854. The Florence Synodical Female College was chartered by the Alabama Legislature in December, 1855 and received its first students that same year. White female applicants were accepted without regard to class or religious denomination, although daughters of Presbyterian clergy received preference. The stated aim of the College was to train young ladies for proper sphere in the home and drawing room. Dr. William H. Mitchell, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Florence, served as president of the academy until 1871. Five other presidents followed him. The Board of Trustees consisted of fifteen prominent business men. Robert M. Patton, later governor of Alabama, was Chairman of the Board. The education building, facing Wilson Park (then called the Public Walk), consisted of classrooms, offices, and a library. The dormitory faced Seminary Street where the post office is currently located." The text on side two reads: "Students often used the Public Walk for recreation. The city assisted this activity by planting 100 trees and fencing the area to keep the cows out. FSFC faculty and staff usually included six or seven teaching faculty members plus a cook and janitor. The faculty taught in departments of language, literature, natural science, mathematics, music and a preparatory department. Enrollment averaged about 100 and never exceeded 140 students. Students came from all parts of the South, but mainly from more affluent families of Northwest Alabama. Student life and activities were strictly controlled. Off campus generally limited to family members. During some years students were required to wear uniforms to discourage extravagant dressing. Financial troubles and competition from the state supported co-female University, which opened in 1891, forced closure of the College in 1893. In 1895 the land, buildings, and appurtenance were sold to satisfy financial obligations. The dormitory was demolished in 1911 clearing the way for the federal building. The educational building was occupied by several businesses and the Elks Club until razed in 1972." It contains the graves of early settlers, including a son and brother of Ferdinand Sannoner, Surveyor of Florence, and served as the principal cemetery for over 130 years. The Grotto is located on the grounds of the Saint Bernard Abbey. The Grotto was created by Brother Jespeh Zoettel, a monk originally from Bavaria who immigrated to the United State after being recruited by an American priest. Zoettel began creating his masterpieces in 1918 from leftover construction materials. His crafts were inspired by the Bible and real life historical buildings and accounts. Over fourty years. Zoettel created 125 images including miniatures of St. Peter’s Basilica, Noah’s Ark, the Alamo, and even a representation of the City of Jerusalem. Zoettel created his last miniature when he was 80 years old, the Lourdes Basilica Church. Zoettel died on October 15, 1961. The site was named the Ave Maria Grotto in 1934, after Zoettel’s most unique creation, the Ave Maria Grotto, a wholly original creation. The Grotto is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Alabama. In 1911, the community moved to its first building at the corner of Conti and Warren streets. In 1956, the location was moved across the street to Dauphin street. The congregation would move to its present location in 1989 on Regents Way. The synagogue has affiliated groups, a pre-school, and a Hebrew school. The synagogue also offers a range of worship services and burials services for men and women. The current rabbi is the 21st rabbi of Ahavas Chesed. One of the most famous members of the synagogue was Mayer Mitchell, who served as president of the Israel Public Affairs Committee, an organization that lobbies for Israel and Jewish interests. Title A name given to the resource Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Subject The topic of the resource Religion, Catholic, Mobile County, Mobile, National Register of Historic Places, Father Michael Portier Description An account of the resource Located in Mobile, the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was consecrated in December of 1850, fifteen years after the first cornerstone had been laud. Father Michael Portier was the leader in the construction of the cathedral after being made the founding bishop of the Diocese of Mobile in 1829. Originally this diocese included all of Alabama and Florida. The cathedral has gone through a series of enhancement and repairs over the years including in 1865 when the explosion of a magazine shop destroyed all of the plain glass windows in one of the walls and in 1954 when a fire collapsed the sanctuary floor, and the basement was flooded to stop the fire. In 1963, Pope John XXIII designated the Cathedral as a Minor Basilica. This designation is awarded based on several criteria including antiquity, historical, cultural, and artistic importance. On December 8th, 2004, the Cathedral celebrated the tercentennial of its establishment. A three-year plan for restoration was also completed at this point. Today the Cathedral offers daily mass and is open all day to everyone for private prayer. The BIS started in 1990 when local Muslims in the Birmingham area were looking for a common place to worship. In the following years, the BIS established locations in Homewood, Hoover, and Fairfield. The Hoover location was bought in 2006 and the first Jummah prayer was held on December, 28, 2007. The new Masjid was later named the Hoover Crescent Islamic Center (HCIC). The members of the HCIC include Muslims of varying nationalities from states in the Arab and Indian subcontinents, and also the United States. The political leaders of the HCIC are the board of directors who are elected by the community. The board is responsible for laying down the policies at the center and also making sure that the center follows the bylaws. The current president of the board is Ashfaque Taufique. The current religious leader is Imam Tamer Salim. His responsibilities include leading the community in the ways of Islam. The Islamic community in Hoover is a very tight-knit community. The religion is the strongest affiliation for all members. The majority practice Sunni Islam; however, those who practice Shi’a Islam are welcome at the center. The center also welcomes non-Islamic members of the community to come and learn about Islam, and invites everyone to take part in activities like the Day of Dignity, a day where Muslims attend to the needs of the less fortunate within society.
