Description

Samuel M. Bowen owned several businesses around Athens, Alabama. He operated Yarbrough Brothers and Bowen 5, 10, and 25 Cent Store in 1909. In 1913 he operated Lerman and Bowen, located on the north side of the square where Cluxton's Jewelry is now. In 1914 he operated Lerman and Bowen Grocery. In 1919 he operated Bowen and Johnson Shoes, Grocery, and Hardware, eventually partnering with John Caine. He later expanded his business to include appliances and then furniture. The last store, Sam M. Bowen Company was located on the West side of the Square where the Rogers Center is located. He operated the business with his son-in-law, Jim Burke King.
