Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District

The Athens Courthouse Square Commercial District is located in Athens, Alabama, near the Limestone County Courthouse. Due to the destruction of buildings during the Civil War and major fires that occurred in the late-1800s, this district largely dates from the early twentieth century. Between the 1910s and 1920s, Athens saw a rise in development due to increase in manufacturing, and in 1930s the electricity provided by the TVA. There are notable buildings located within the district such as the current post office building.
