Post Number 4448 was located near Chewacla State Park and Post Number 4447 was located on South College Street in Auburn. Members of the Corps came from states throughout the South. From 1935-1941 Post 4448 built Chewacla State Park, including construction of a dam and lake, cabins, roads, trails, office, and bath houses. Education was a major benefit of joining the CCC. In Lee County classes were offered by Alabama Polytechnic Institute, in both the camps and on campus. One report from Post 4448 claimed that 92 percent of the men were enrolled in educational courses. The advent of World War II resulted in the closing of both CCC camps in 1941. Only a water tower and foundations remain from the camp of Post 4448. Dillard. Its exterior is made of grey stone, unique to the local area. Dillard's wife and daughter were the first women registered as voters in Lee County. In 1925 Auburn University's Sigma Pi Fraternity was chartered in the home. The Dillard-Lawson House was also the residence of Alabama's first female lawyer, Mabel Yerby. The home was renovated and now serves as a venue for special events. It served as a plantation in the antebellum period and as a tenant farm in the early 20th century. In 1937 J.W. Clegg applied for a farm loan under the New Deal Bankhead-Jones Act of 1937 to purchase the property. He was the first farmer from the local area to apply, and second to receive funds from this legislation. The house, located at 23385 U.S. Highway 80, was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996. Title A name given to the resource Ebenezer Baptist Church Subject The topic of the resource Auburn, AL; Lee County, AL; African-American History; Religion; Segregation; National Register of Historic Places Description An account of the resource Ebenezer Baptist Church was the second African-American church in the city of Auburn. The congregation was formed in 1868 and construction completed on the building in 1870. Ebenezer served as the primary member of the Auburn District Association, a collection of 27 African-American Baptist churches in Lee, Macon, and Tallapoosa counties. The association provided monetary support to the Baptist Colored University in Selma and for the creation of African-American schools in Opelika. After the departure of the Ebenezer congregation in 1969, the building was renovated by the Auburn Heritage Association. It currently serves as the home of the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Title A name given to the resource Bean's Mill Subject The topic of the resource Opelika, AL; Lee County, AL; Industry; Grist Mill Description An account of the resource This grist mill was originally built in 1834 by Sam Carter and Henry Byrd as a sawmill. In 1848 John "Jack" Floyd purchased the property and in 1852 Floyd's Mill Rd (now US 29) was established. During the Civil War, the mill provided supplies to the Confederate government. The milll was destroyed in a flood in 1874, but was rebuilt by John W. and W.H.H. Griffin. In 1907, the eponymous George W. Bean bought the mill. He owned the property until his death in 1952 after which the mill sat unoccupied. During the 1930s, a canning school was set up by the extension service and FDR visited the site in 1939 on his way from Opelika to Warm Springs. Today the mill has been reconstructed as a historical site located at 6247 US 29 N, Opelika, AL. "Bud" Ingram in the Clement Hotel in Opelika in 1910, it moved to the Montgomery Brothers' Building in 1911 and to its own building on S 8th St. in 1914. Ingram sold the business to Jim Tom Hamilton in 1923 who moved the operation to three combined building on 231 8th. The bakery was purchased by Hamilton's son in 1936 and the name was changed from Ingram's to Hamilton's Bakery. In 1962, Hamilton built a new building at 101 Simmons St. and in 1964 the business was purchased by Flowers Baking Company of Thomasville, GA. The business is still in operation as of 2014. She is the second ship of that name and a sister ship of the Gorch Fock built in 1933. At the time, Jim Crow laws in Alabama demanded that seating on buses be racially segregated. Cogs were generally built of oak, which was an abundant timber in the Baltic region of Prussia. This vessel was fitted with a single mast and a square-rigged single sail.
