The village was designed in the shape of a handbell. At completion, the village had 112 houses, two schools, and one large apartment building. (Maud Lindsey was hired as the first kindergarten teacher at the school.) The houses were intended to serve as homes for the people who moved to the area to work on Wilson Dam and in the nitrate plants. Harold Caparn, who was from New York and who helped expand the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, was chosen as the architect for the project. Most of the houses are either craftsman or Mission style. When World War I ended and there was less need for the nitrate plants, the houses were unoccupied. Henry Ford wanted to purchase the village as part of his plan to develop the area. Some of the houses were occupied by Alabama Power Company employees and Tennessee Valley Authority employees in subsequent years. In 1949, the streets, playgrounds, and school were deeded to the city of Sheffield by the TVA and the houses were auctioned to the public. Handy Home and Museum located in Florence is dedicated to telling the story of “Father of the Blues” William Christopher Handy’s life and musical career. The museum’s main building is the cabin Handy was born in. The home was in a state of disrepair in 1954 when Handy donated the funds for its purchase to the city of Florence. Because the original site was in the way of a housing development, the cabin was painstakingly dismantled and each piece was labeled and put into storage. In 1970, the W.C. Handy Home was reassembled and restored at its present location at 620 West College Street. A separate building for the museum houses furniture, pictures, and musical instruments that Handy owned. The cabin is furnished with items donated by Florence citizens that are representative of the era during which Handy lived in the cabin. The W.C. Handy Museum is the location of an annual W.C. Handy Birthday Celebration each year on November 16. The W. C. Handy Music Festival is held each year during the last week of July. Description An account of the resource William Christopher Handy, born in Florence, Alabama, on November 16, 1873 and is considered to be the “Father of the Blues.” His musical legacy is a prime part of the music culture in the Shoals region, especially in his home town of Florence. To celebrate Handy’s role in America’s blues music, the W. C. Handy Music Festival was organized by the non-profit organization called Music Preservation Society, Inc. The Music Preservation Society, Inc. established in 1982 in order to “preserve, present, and promote the musical heritage of Northwest Alabama.” While the organization puts on numerous events throughout the year, the W. C. Handy Music Festival each July is the most prominent. The music festival has been recognized as a top twenty summer event by the Southeast Tourism Society. The first Handy Music festival, organized in 1982 by the Music Preservation Society, lasted for a summer weekend and musician Dizzy Gillespie headlined. Over the past decades, the annual festival has evolved into a ten day event that consists of over two hundred musical shows and concerts. The music showcases music in Florence and the surrounding cities in various parks, restaurants, libraries, museums, sidewalks, and lawns. Some of the musicians and bands that have headlined the festival throughout the years are The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Drive By Truckers, Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge, Donnie Fritts, Bonnie Bramlett, and Roy Ayers. The funding for the festival comes from grants, sponsorships, donations, and sales from festival memorabilia. Temple Company and Planning Mills was a fixture in Florence at the beginning of the twentieth century. W.E. Temple was well known for his architectural ability because he constructed the 1901 Lauderdale County Courthouse and the 1903 Florence First United Methodist Church, which met an unfortunate demise in a fire in 1920, and the Florence Post Office in 1912-1913. Shortly after completing the federal building, the Temples left for Hopewell, Virginia to make a new home. Temple’s Planning Mill was originally located alongside Sweetwater Creek on Huntsville Road between Sweetwater Avenue and Minnehaha Street. Turn left (west) onto County Rd. 14 (Waterloo Rd.) and travel 5.4 miles to the community of Oakland, Alabama. Turn left onto County Rd. 15 and go about 1.1 mile to the cemetery on the right about 100 yards off the road. Walston cemetery is an old cemetery with the oldest known burial being Elizabeth Walston in 1830. The name of the cemetery is taken from the Walston family. Thirty to thirty-five unidentified graves surround the white section. The black section has multiple sunken areas that are graves with no markers. Some slaves might have been buried in this area. The cemetery combined has a record of 435 records. Title A name given to the resource Washington Baptist Church Subject The topic of the resource Washington County, Wagarville, Religion, Christianity, Baptist, cemetery, Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage Description An account of the resource The Washington Church was established in 1883; however, the present church building was not built until 1916. The building itself is a one room church, common in the rural south. The church is one of the few remaining that were built in the 19th century and then remodeled and modernized over time. However the church still does not have a steeple, water, heating, or air conditioning. Behind the church building is a cemetery that is over a hundred years old and holds over a hundred graves. Near the church entrance is a large maker that commemorated the five charter members of the church in 1883- Clem and Sarah Henson, Augustus Kirkland, Sally and Dr. Obadiah Lynes, the first pastor. The oldest death date on a headstone is 1901. The cemetery is still active as is the church. The church was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2010. Title A name given to the resource Waterloo Baptist Church Subject The topic of the resource Church; Religion Description An account of the resource Early Baptists settlers in Waterloo, Alabama, met in a two-story log meeting house. This building was erected in 1845. The structure was 40 x 60 feet. During the week, children in the Waterloo community attended school in the church’s main floor, while the upper floor acted as a fraternal lodge. However, the church building was destroyed during the Civil War. Under the command of General James Harrison Wilson, the Union Cavalry dismantled the Baptists church. One Waterloo citizen, John W. Till, recalled that he “saw a part of the soldiers of a Michigan Regiment tearing down the church” and they used the materials from the church and “built out of them their quarters.” As a result of the destruction of the church, during the 1870s and 1880s the church’s congregation had to hold services in various homes in the Waterloo community. In 1904, the congregation’s minister, Reverend W. J. Webb, testified that the church building was completely destroyed and probably worth only one thousand dollars. As a result, the Trustees of the Church decided to sue the United States for a total of one thousand dollars for the account of damages by the Union forces. The court rewarded the congregation with six hundred and fifteen dollars. Today, the congregation continues to thrive. Near the end of July 1862, older men from the town of Waterloo fired on the USS Cottage a transport vessel. The escorting gunboats returned fire, shelling the town. Union soldiers disembarked and arrested several men from the town led by resident Josiah Higgins. The men were sent to federal prison in Alton, Illinois. A member of the group, riverboat captain John Thomas Humphrey died in a makeshift prison camp at McDowell College in St. Louis, Missouri. Higgins was subsequently released and returned to Waterloo. Then take the Pea Ridge Road for about seven miles, turn left at the first paved cross roads. Go for about three miles until the road comes to a "T", turn left and go almost to the edge of the water. There are a few small creeks that cross the dirt road. An off-road vehicle may be recommended to travel to this cemetery. The cemetery is on the left side of the road. Weeden Jr. during the building of Wilson Dam and the World War I Defense Plants. He was also the first African-American student to earn a degree from UNA. Gunn went on to work in banking and became the vice president for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. The text on the marker reads: "The Wesleyan Bell was manufactured by the C.S. Bell Company in Hillsboro, Ohio, it is made of alloy steel, has a diameter of 38 inches, and is 24 inches high (not including its yoke). The weight of the bell is 660 pounds. When 350- pounds mountings are added, the total weight is 1,010 pounds. The bell was mounted atop Wesleyan Hall after the school was donated to the state by the Methodist Church in 1873, at which time the school became State Normal College. The bell was used to call students to class, for ceremonial purposes, and other uses. Around 1910, the bell was removed from Wesleyan Hall and placed in storage. In 1951, the bell was discovered and unsuccessful efforts were made by alumni to display it on campus. During the summer of 2002, the 130-year-old Wesleyan Bell was rediscovered after having been in storage for over 90 years. Construction of the Smith Bell Tower began in March of 2003, and was completed during the summer of 2004. The Smith Bell Tower, present home of the Wesleyan Bell, was dedicated during a ceremony on September 17, 2004." Bell Compony in Hillsboro, Ohio manufactured the Wesleyan Bell. It is believed that the bell was put on top of Welseyan Hall when the college reopened as State Normal School in 1872. The last know account of the bell being rung occurred in 1910. It was used to warn of a fire that had broken out in Wesleyan Hall. The bell was removed sometime after that. There are reports that the bell was found in storage in 1951, but nothing was done with it. In 2002, the bell was again found, this time in a university basement during renovations. Alumni and school officials worked to refurbish the bell and create a tower for its display. The total project cost $110,000. Title A name given to the resource Wesleyan Hall Subject The topic of the resource National Register of Historic Places; Gothic Revival; Architecture; Education; Civil War Description An account of the resource Nashville architect Adolphus Heiman designed the Gothic Revival building and Zebulon Pike Morrison, a native of Virginia, who migrated to Lauderdale County constructed the building. Wesleyan Hall was reportedly his finest work. The three story masonry building was built in 1855 as the new home of Methodist church affiliated LaGrange College. When the school, under the leadership of Dr. R.H. Rivers, moved to Florence the name was changed to Wesleyan University. The college operated under the Methodist Conferences of Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi until the Civil War. Mass enlistment forced the school to close and the grounds were periodically used by troops. After the war the Methodists found they did not have enough funds to reopen. The building was offered to the state and the building became the State Normal School in 1872. The Alabama State Normal School was the first state supported teachers school in the south and a legislative Act in 1873 included the education of women, another first for the region. The building is now part of the University of North Alabama. The 1974 NR nomination lists the significance of Wesleyan Hall in terms of architecture, as one of the few surviving Gothic Revival buildings in the area, and in terms of education for its role in the education of Alabama’s teachers. Title A name given to the resource Wheeler Plantation Subject The topic of the resource Lawrence County, Hillsboro, Plantation, Wheeler Plantation Description An account of the resource Wheeler Plantation, or Ponds Spring, was the residence of General Joseph Wheeler from 1866 to 1906. Wheeler was a West Point graduate, a leader of the Confederate Calvary, a U.S. Congressman, and a Spanish-American War hero. Among the historic structures on the property are three dwellings from three different periods: an early "dogtrot" log cabin, an antebellum plantation residence, and the present main house built after the Civil War. The site also contains three cemeteries, a log barn, and an ice house with a stone-lined cellar. Wheeler's daughter, Annie, lived on the plantation until her death in 1955. It remained in the Wheeler family until 1993, when it was donated by them to the state of Alabama and the Alabama Historical Commission. The museum is open Wednesday - Saturday, 9am - 4pm and Sunday, 1pm - 5pm. Wed.-Sat., tours given hourly at 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Closed for lunch from 12pm to 1pm. To reach the Whitten Cemetery, travel on Lauderdale County Road 14 to Waterloo. Continue to follow County Rd. 14 turning right. Continue on 1.07 miles and turn right onto County Road 90. Go 1.37 miles and the cemetery is on the hill on the left. This is a very old cemetery with many graves and few markers. It sits upon a hill accessible only by a steep path. There are few large cedar trees located in the cemetery. The earliest date on a marker is 1790 marking the grave of Alexander Higgins. She never felt safe at her new home and ran away spending 5 years making her way back to the Singing River. The more than a mile long wall is made up of stones from more than 120 countries. Most of the stones come from Lauderdale County. Each stone represents one of her steps on her journey, The shape, height, and width of the wall all change to represent the trials she faced. The Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall is the largest monument to a Native American woman. Dawson House, also known as the Dawson-Wilson House, in Spring Hill, Alabama done by Martin Lide, Jr. sometime between 1917 and 1942. The house was built in 1834. The painting shows the front exterior of the house with its doors, windows, shutters, columned porch, steps, columned balcony, hand railing, sloped roof, and two chimneys surrounded by trees and landscaping. There is a man in period dress on the steps. The house is placed within framing art showing its architectural features including the molding under the roof and the second floor balcony, side and top views of the columns, a rear view of the house, floor plans, and the wooden railing from the porch and balcony. Title A name given to the resource William Barnard Log Cabin (Kinnebrew-Middlebrooks-Newell House) Subject The topic of the resource Lee County, AL; Native American History; Creek Indians; Log Cabins; Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage Description An account of the resource In the early 1830s, William Barnard, a mixed-race Creek Indian, built a log cabin on 640 acres of land in what is now western Lee County. Barnard was an influential leader of the Creeks in western Georgia and served under U.S. militia general John Floyd in the First Creek War. Though he fought on the side of the United States in that conflict, Barnard was forced off of his Georgia property by the terms of subsequent treaties. The land upon which the cabin was built was granted to Barnard for his service in the First Creek War, for which he was also was granted the rank of major. Just before his death in 1833, Barnard recorded the first deed at the new Chambers County Courthouse, stipulating the division of his home, property and slaves between his twelve children upon his death. Barnard's son John, the executor of the deed, was likely defrauded of his inheritance by the court, and moved to the Indian Territory with the rest of the family. The property then passed through a succession of white owners and fell into disrepair. The cabin was donated by its last owner, Newell Floyd, to the Lee County Historical Society, of which Floyd is a member. The cabin was moved from its original site to Pioneer Park in Loachapoka, and is currently undergoing restoration. The home was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996. Located near the original site is a cemetery containing the remains of the Kinnebrew family and the site of Fort Henderson, a militia fort built to protect against Creek attacks. Title A name given to the resource William Basil Wood Subject The topic of the resource William Basil Wood Description An account of the resource William Basil Wood was born on October 31, 1820. Wood was a LaGrange College graduate, and practiced law in Florence before the Civil War. Wood served as a colonel of the 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was recommended for promotion to brigadier general, but worked as President of the Military Court when he was assigned to General James Longstreet’s Corps. Besides being a lawyer, Wood served as circuit court judge and a Methodist minister after the war. Wood was instrumental in the movement of La Grange College from Leighton to Florence in 1855. Wood was also one of the first historians of Lauderdale County. William Basil Wood passed away on April 3, 1891. He is buried in the Florence Cemetery along with his wife, Sarah. Wood Avenue in Florence is named in his honor.
