"Alabama Agriculture," Constance Ortmayer (1940)
Subject
The topic of the resource
Scottsboro, Jackson County, art, public art, sculpture, bas relief, Works Progress Administration, Constance Ortmeyer
Description
An account of the resource
<span>Constance Ortmayer was born in New York City in 1902 and graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at Vienna, Austria. She returned to the United States in 1932 and was teaching art at Rollins College in Florida when she was commissioned to complete two bas relief sculptures for the post offices at Arcadia, Florida and Scottsboro, Alabama. The Arcadia relief was completed in 1939. The Scottsboro relief, </span><em>Alabama Agriculture</em><span>, was completed in 1940. Ortmayer said of the Scottsboro piece, "Three phases of cotton growing from the theme of the central panel. On the right the cultivation of the crop is symbolized by the young man working with a hoe among the new plants. Opposite a young woman is depicted picking ripened bolls, and for the background, the processing and shipping of cotton is represented by the bales and the strong figure of a second young worker standing between them. Both of the flanking panels interpret the growing of corn. The young man and woman shown on the right are examining the fruit on the ripened stalks and the couple on the left are represented as workers who have harvested the new crop." The Treasury Section of Fine Arts, who commissioned the piece, wrote of the work, "In a sculpture characterized by clean, flowing lines, Miss Ortmayer gives an exceptionally effective representation of the youthful strength and grace that each new generation brings to the agriculture of the South."</span>

Description
An account of the resource
Compared to the other buildings located on Taylor Street in downtown Guntersville, Alabama, this is a relatively new building. Constructed in the early 1950s with brick and concrete blocks, the building is easily twenty to thirty years newer than the other Taylor Street commercial buildings. It is built in the similar city block style as the other Taylor Street buildings. The roof is flat and planed like the other Taylor Street buildings and the façade of the building is a light colored brick.
When originally constructed, the building just had the two windows and center entryway. In an addition added in the early 1960s, a two-bay construction of a window and entryway was built. The building was also remodeled in the mid-1970s.

Description
An account of the resource
This two story commercial building is located at 356 Gunter Ave in downtown Guntersville, AL. Built in 1940, the building faces east and features a flat roof with a flat facade parapet. It was remodeled around 1990, at which time aluminum windows were added, and the modern stucco surface was applied.
The Great Depression came to Guntersville in 1929 as it did to the rest of the nation. Between 1935 and 1941, the city of Guntersville received economic assistance from the Works Progress Administration, the Public Works Administration, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, which employed 1,400 people in the construction of Guntersville Dam. At a time when jobs were scarce and the economy was failing, Guntersville was aided by an influx of federal money to improve its infrastructure and build new federal facilities. New businesses opened in downtown Guntersville during a period of minimal national growth.

Description
An account of the resource
This historic marker is located in front of the Lauderdale County Courthouse in Florence, AL.
The text on the marker reads: "Created Feb. 6, 1818 by Alabama Territorial Legislature. (Alabama became a state in 1819) Named for Col. James Lauderdale, cavalryman under Gen. John Coffee and Andrew Jackson, War of 1812; killed in battle of New Orleans. Coffee planned Florence, the county seat. Jackson, President Madison owned lots."
It should be noted that President Madison did not own lots in Florence. Another James Madison did own lots and there has been long-standing confusion about his identity.

An account of the resource
This historic marker is located on County Road 5 at County Road 568 in Rogersville, AL.
The text on the marker reads: "The home-place of Bettie Anne Springer-Thornton lies 1.6 miles north on the east side of Lauderdale County Road 51. This home was originally a one-room log cabin, built between 1892 and 1894 by Levi Patrick Thornton. Two rooms and a dog-trot were added prior to 1905. The home was razed and rebuilt in 1945, excluding the south room which remained intact. Levi and Bettie Anne were married on February 8, 1876, and had twelve children.
They are buried in the Ingram-Thornton Cemetery in Good Springs (old Thorntontown)."
The marker was erected by the Alabama Historical Commission.
