The farm is located four miles northwest of Hodges. Abner Overton, who was a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, visited Alabama in 1815. During his visit to Alabama, he peddled tobacco. He returned in 1817 to discover 160 acres of rich soil near Bear Creek. He registered the land in Pontitoc, Mississippi, sold his wagon and built a shed. He married Judy May in 1819 and began construction on a one-room log cabin. Abner died in 1877 a year after his wife died. The house was then passed to their children and other family members until 1946. The farm was restored by the Northwest Alabama State Junior College in the 1970s and was used as an educational center until 2013. In 1973, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Title A name given to the resource Cedar Creek Furnace (Alabama Iron Works) Subject The topic of the resource Franklin County, Russellville, Cedar Creek Furnace Description An account of the resource Cedar Creek Furnace is a blast furnace located on a site near Russellville, Alabama. Joseph Heslip, a native of Pennsylvania, acquired the property around 1811 and used slave labor to construct the furnace. In 1820, a cholera outbreak killed Heslip and many of the furnace operators. In November 1825, the site was put up for auction and was purchased by Aaron Wells. Like Heslip, Wells was an ironmaker and operated the site for two years before he sold it to Robert Napier. From 1832 to 1836, the furnace operated until the creek near the site flooded. The floodwater extinguished the furnace and hardened the metal, making the furnace useless. Cedar Creek Furnace was the first iron ore furnaces in Alabama. It is one of the earliest examples of a Tidewater-type cottage. Constructed in 1830 by the Dandridge family, the house was developed with a double-square formula that was used by colonial Virginia house builders. There was a separate brick kitchen that stood close to the rear of the house. In 1907, the house and surrounding farm became known as Sunnybrook. Title A name given to the resource Old State Bank Subject The topic of the resource Morgan County, Decatur, Banks, Old State Bank Description An account of the resource Constructed in 1833, the Old State Bank in Decatur, Alabama, served as the Decatur Branch of the State Bank of Alabama. The Alabama General Assembly passed legislation to create the State Bank of Alabama in 1830. Formed in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, the bank would have additional branches in Decatur and Mobile. Construction of the bank began the same year, despite the controversy of Decatur being chosen as one of the sites with only 200 residents. The benefit of being close to the Tennessee River helped change that. The bank was designed in the Jeffersonian style with a price of $10,000. Much of the construction was done by enslaved workers from James Fennell's plantation. The bank opened up for business on July 29, 1833, but unfortunately accumulated a debt of more than $1 million dollars by 1840. It remained empty until it was occupied by Federal troops in 1861. The bank served as a headquarters, storehouse, and a field hospital. The thick walls protected most of the soldiers from different forms of projectiles. After the Civil War, the bank served multiple purposes for the citizens of Decatur. It was a doctor's office and a residence. The bank was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It was donated by the American Legion, Post No. 15, to the City of Decatur and became a museum in 1984. The Old State Bank is located at 952 Bank Street NE, in Decatur. Title A name given to the resource Athens Female Academy / Athens State University Subject The topic of the resource Education; Athens State University; Athens, AL; Limestone County, AL Description An account of the resource The city of Athens was founded in 1818 by Robert Beaty and associates, and shortly afterward these same founders persuaded Judge John McKinley to give the land for a female academy. They then recruited Daniel Perrin Bestor of Connecticut to preside over it. In 1822, they obtained a charter from the new legislature of the state of Alabama. During the first few decades, Athens Female Academy's presidents were Baptist, Presbyterian, or Methodist ministers. In 1842 the Methodist conference voted to accept the academy, and local supporters built Founder's Hall. The first president, Reverend Richard Henderson Rivers revised the curriculum, giving the collegiate degree a more regular status, while maintaining elementary through secondary levels. Madame Jane Hamilton Childs, who was president before, during, and after the Civil War, was one of the college's most unique presidents. She not only furnished the campus elegantly and turned out excellent female graduates, she also kept the college open during the war and prevented occupying Federal troops from coming onto the campus. Two women have presided over the college - Madame Childs for eleven years and Mary Norman Moore McCoy, two terms for a total of seventeen years. In 1908, President Moore oversaw the elimination of the elementary level, the establishment of Rivers Hall as the secondary level, and the national recognition of Athens Female College. In the 1930s President E.R. Naylor began admitting male students and obtained a name change to Athens College. He also oversaw the creation of a work/study program for students in the area during the Depression. In 1975, the Methodist conference gave the college and its property to the State of Alabama. The state recreated it as a degree-granting upper-division college, the only one of its kind in the state. Students complete their junior and senior years at Athens State. In 1998, Athens State College's name was changed to Athens State University. He operated Yarbrough Brothers and Bowen 5, 10, and 25 Cent Store in 1909. In 1913 he operated Lerman and Bowen, located on the north side of the square where Cluxton's Jewelry is now. In 1914 he operated Lerman and Bowen Grocery. In 1919 he operated Bowen and Johnson Shoes, Grocery, and Hardware, eventually partnering with John Caine. He later expanded his business to include appliances and then furniture. The last store, Sam M. Bowen Company was located on the West side of the Square where the Rogers Center is located. He operated the business with his son-in-law, Jim Burke King. The sawmill operated as S.G. Flanagan Lumber until 1940, when it became more of a retail lumberyard. In 1960, the company was eventually incorporated as Flanagan Lumber Company, Inc. The company was operated by S. G. and his two sons, Delwood and Ozro. Delwood and Ozro continued operating the company after their father's death in 1966. Delwood's son, Gideon, joined his uncle Ozro in managing the company. The lumber company still owns the original lumberyard in Pleasant Valley and also operates another lumberyard located in Athens on Shaw Street. After several tours of Lawrence County, the home is constructed in 1824 by Reverend Turner Saunders. Saunders had been a Methodist minister and planter from Brunswick County, Virginia. Saunders had sold the home in 1844 to Freeman Goode. The Hall family acquires the home at a later time. The Goode-Hall House is an excellent example of Classic Revival with late Georgian trim and detail. It resembles Belle Mina and the State Bank in Decatur except for the Federal double chimney gable parapet walls on the side. The Government Land Office has purchased the land in 1820. Title A name given to the resource Courtland Historic District Subject The topic of the resource Historic Districts; Courtland, AL; Lawrence County, AL Description An account of the resource Courtland Historic District is located in the center of Courtland, Alabama, in Lawrence County. The town was founded in 1818 and was established the following year. The citizens chose the site due to the close proximity to the Tennessee River to help with the transportation of cottons and other goods. The Lawrence County seat was originally going to be located in Courtland, but was moved to Decatur instead. The development of Courtland was hindered until residents received help from the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad. Most of the earlier structures in the town were constructed of logs, and later replaced with frame and brick buildings. The oldest houses in the district include a few I-houses and the 1828 Federal-style John McMahon House. The town began to rise after the Civil War with the construction of the Presbyterian church. In 1887, the Southern Railway built a depot to replace the previous one; it was later converted to a library in 1980. In the 1920s, Bungalows and other modern homes were constructed in the district. The Courtland Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Title A name given to the resource Belle Mina Plantation Subject The topic of the resource Plantations; Belle Mina; Limestone County, AL Description An account of the resource Belle Mina Plantation is a Late Georgian-style home located in the community of Belle Mina, Alabama. The home was constructed in 1826 by Alabama's second governor, Thomas Bibb. Thomas Bibb purchased 2,500 acres of land in Northern Alabama and decided to construct a plantation in the center of it. During the Civil War, the home was occupied by Federal troops. The plantation house has a front portico with six wide Doric Columns. The slave quarters and kitchen are joined on the side of the one story wing. This is different from most plantations, because most slave quarters were separated from the main house in Alabama. At one time, a brick wall surrounded the plantation house, but it has been removed. The fireplace mantels and interior trim show handplowed moldings, constructed by slave labor. The marker reads, "When the city was surveyed, this land described as 'outside city limits' was designated as the burying grounds for the new town. It contains the graves of early settlers, including a son and brother of Ferdinand Sannoner, surveyor of Florence, and served as the principal cemetery for over 130 years. Two former governors of Alabama from the O'Neal family, as well as many prominent community leaders, are interred here. "Soldier's Rest", a Confederate Cemetery is located near the south property line. This cemetery is massive and contains over 9,000 records. It is divided into 26 sections. Rapier was a freed African-American in Florence, Alabama. Born as a slave in 1808, Rapier was emancipated in 1829 by the last will and testament of Richard Rapier. Upon receiving his freedom, John became a barber and earned an income of about $1000 per year. Rapier became influential in the community and upon his death in 1869, was considered a wealthy man. One slave, named Edmund managed to warn the family of the raid. When the soldiers attempted to make their way upstairs to the rooms of the Patton's daughters, Edmund blocked their path. After the Civil War, the Patton's gave Edmund--nicknamed "Uncle Champ"--acreage and a farm house. He was also buried in the family cemetery. Because Sam's mother was the cook for the Patton family, he lived in the kitchen behind the big house. When Alabama seceded from the Union, Billy took Sam with him to war. In 1862, Billy and Sam fought with Company C of the 16th Alabama Infantry at Shiloh. On April 6, Billy fell, mortally wounded in a charge south of Shiloh Church. As the Confederates retreated, Sam refused to leave Billy's body on the battlefield. When darkness fell, Sam recovered Billy's body and returned him to his family at Sweetwater. The cemetery is due east of the ruins of the Forks of Cypress, located on the Old Jackson Road, which stretches from North Florence to the Savannah Highway. Separating the ruins from the Cemetery is Dowdy Road. There is a 90’x 90’ cut stonewall that is four feet in height surrounding it. Jackson History: At the age of 17, James Jackson came to America from Ballibay County in Monaghan, Ireland, in 1799. His sister Elenaora, and her husband Thomas Kirkman came along with Jackson. Jackson, along with his sister and her husband, settled in Nashville. While living in Nashville, Jackson met Sarah Moore McCullouch who was a widow from South Carolina. On December 28, 1810, James and Sally were married. James Jackson, along with General John Coffee, future Supreme Court Justice John McKinley and other partners, established the Cypress Land Company in 1818. They realized that land companies were great investments. The first land sale for land in Florence was held in 1818. Lauderdale County was soon formed with Florence serving as county seat. Jackson realized Florence had a great potential, so he decided to construct his plantation in the surrounding area. Four miles from Florence, at the junction of the Big and Little Cypress Creeks, Jackson constructed his mansion with 3,000 acres. In 1820, Jackson died and was laid to rest among relatives in Jackson Cemetery. History of the Cemetery: Unfortunately, there is no exact evidence of the age of Jackson Cemetery. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of Jane Hannah Anderson, infant daughter of Henry and Ellen Anderson, buried September 19, 1829. It is believed that during the early years of the cemetery there was no wall. Only when Master James Jackson decided to make it a family resting place was the wall constructed. He was a stonemason and a carpenter and according to his family he was one of the first in his community to have electricity. Ingram and his father established an African American cemetery named Ingram-Thornton Cemetery in 1881. It has since been renamed Thorntontown Cemetery. Physical evidence suggests the orientation of the cemetery has changed. In the older portion of the cemetery, the tombstones face opposite from the entrance. In 1820, he came to Florence with the Peter Blow family. Seven years later, the Blow's Inn was established and Scott served as a stable hand. In 1830, the Blow family relocated to St. Louis, Missouri and Dred was sold to Dr. John Emerson. After Emerson's death, Dred Scott sued for his freedom. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, where it was heard in 1857. Supreme Justice Roger Taney and the majority of the Supreme Court decided that persons of African descent had no legal standing and thus, were not citizens of the United States. The decision was a major catalyst for the abolition movement. Title A name given to the resource The Shoals Theatre Subject The topic of the resource Theatre; Arts; Culture; Florence, AL; Lauderdale County, AL Description An account of the resource The Shoals Theatre, located in historic downtown Florence, Alabama at 123 North Seminary Street, first opened in 1948. At the time of its grand opening, the art deco style theatre was one of the finest in the Southeast. It originally sat 1,350 people and was one of four theatres in the world to have slide back chairs. On October 21, 1948, the first movie shown in the Shoals Theatre was That Lady in Ermine. Tickets for children cost ten cents and an adult ticket was forty-five cents. However, due to economic hardships the theatre closed on March 13, 1980. The last Hollywood film shown in the theatre was American Gigolo. Twelve years later in 1992 a California man by the name of Jackson Canup purchased the Alabama theatre. He spent nearly $200,000 on renovations, but was forced to sell the theatre after financial difficulties two years later. In 1996 the Shoals Association of Ministers took over the operations and was awarded two grants from the Alabama Historical Commission for restoration projects. In the 2000s, the Shoals Community Theatre Association purchased the theatre and currently puts on plays, movies, operas, comedies, ballets, and symphonies in the historic venue. Title A name given to the resource John Coffee Slave Cemetery Subject The topic of the resource African-American History; Lauderdale County, AL; Cemeteries; Florence, AL Description An account of the resource John Coffee was born in 1772 and served under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. John Coffee was one of the founding fathers of Florence and had a plantation northeast of Florence. Two acres were deeded separately to contain the family cemetery, as well as the slave cemetery. The slave cemetery has no original markers, but it has been determined that over 100 graves are present. The Florence Historical Board has marked the graves that could be located with stone markers. Title A name given to the resource Wendell Wilkie Gunn Subject The topic of the resource African-American history Description An account of the resource Wendell Wilkie Gunn was the first African-American student to enroll at the University of North Alabama. He was also the first African-American student to earn a degree from UNA. Gunn went on to work in banking and became the vice president for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. Gunn completed an oral history interview with UNA Public History students in the fall of 2013. The interview transcript can be viewed here. In 1937, the school moved into the building that housed Slater Elementary School, and the school was renamed Burrell-Slater School. In 1960, this building was destroyed by fire and a 1962 a new building was built on W. College St. and cost $515,000 to construct. At the time of its founding, the church only had 12 members. The church was originally built in Oakland, a community just west of Florence. It then moved to Jones Place, and its last move was to its current location. The church has had a total of 45 pastors and has a current body of 110 members.
