As Major General William T. Sherman's Union army marched towards Atlanta in the summer of 1864, Confederate officials decided to move the Lathe to the other major Confederate industrial center of Columbus, Georgia to avert its capture. On the way, it was buried in Irondale, Alabama as Sherman's forces bore down on Atlanta and eventually unearthed as Union forces moved further east. It spent the rest of its usable life in Columbus where it continued to bore cannon until the Confederacy's collapse in the spring of 1865. After the war, it was purchased and used by the Birmingham Rolling Mills - later part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company - before it was presented to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later Auburn University) in 1936 where it has stood next to Samford Hall ever since."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Joshua Shiver"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"Alabama Cultural Resource Survey"},{"label":"Date","value":"2014-12-4"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Joshua Shiver"},{"label":"Relation","value":"Auburn Plainsman: The Legend of the Lathe
Historic Markers Across America: the Lathe"},{"label":"Format","value":"JPEG and Text"},{"label":"Language","value":"English"},{"label":"Type","value":"Still Image and Text"}],"sequences":[{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/sequence/normal","@type":"sc:Sequence","label":"Current Page Order","viewingDirection":"left-to-right","viewingHint":"paged","canvases":[{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/canvas/p1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"\"The Lathe\" at Auburn University","thumbnail":{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/46/full/200%2C150/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/46","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":700,"height":525,"images":[{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/annotation/p0001-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/46/full/700%2C525/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":700,"height":525,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/46","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/canvas/p1"}],"metadata":[{"label":"Title","value":"\"The Lathe\" at Auburn University"},{"label":"Source","value":"Waymarking: The Lathe"}]},{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/canvas/p2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"7-Inch Brooke rifle mounted on the CSS Texas","thumbnail":{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/47/full/200%2C135/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/47","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":1200,"height":810,"images":[{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/annotation/p0002-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/47/full/800%2C540/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":1200,"height":810,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif-img/47","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"https://omeka.lib.auburn.edu/iiif/54/canvas/p2"}],"metadata":[{"label":"Title","value":"7-Inch Brooke rifle mounted on the CSS Texas"},{"label":"Source","value":"U.S. Navy \"Plan of mounting for a Brooke single-banded rifle, intended for CSS Texas, 1864\""}]}]}]}
