Title A name given to the resource Auburn United Methodist Church Subject The topic of the resource Religion; Auburn, AL; Lee County, AL; Education Description An account of the resource Judge John Harper and 33 other residents of Harris County, Georgia were the first settlers of Auburn in 1836. One year later they completed construction of a Methodist church, which served as the settlement's first church and school. Church leaders worked with the Methodist Conference to establish the East Alabama Male College in 1856, which later was turned over to the state and would become Auburn University. Initially constructed as a log cabin, the church has been remodeled on several occasions. In 1855 a white frame church replaced the log structure. This was remodeled in 1899, including the installation of a pipe organ which is still in use. A new sanctuary was completed in 1955 and between 1971 and 1975 an education wing and office complex were added. Finally, in 2000 a separate education center was completed. The church is located at 137 South Gay Street. The congregation was formed in 1868 and construction completed on the building in 1870. Ebenezer served as the primary member of the Auburn District Association, a collection of 27 African-American Baptist churches in Lee, Macon, and Tallapoosa counties. The association provided monetary support to the Baptist Colored University in Selma and for the creation of African-American schools in Opelika. After the departure of the Ebenezer congregation in 1969, the building was renovated by the Auburn Heritage Association. It currently serves as the home of the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The owner was one of the leading entrepreneurs in 19th century Auburn. Foster's primary business was tin ware, the art of which he taught to young men that lived in a dormitory on the property. The property also contained a brick works, iron works, sawmill, and photography studio. Auburn University's Samford Hall was built using Foster's bricks. Located on five acres of land, the site contains the original brick carriage house, barn, corn crib, and an art studio. The home was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1977. It is located on Wire Road to the southwest of Auburn. The home was owned by three prominent residents of Auburn. Dickinson Halliday was a planter who had moved to the town from Georgia. During the Civil War, the home was used as a hospital for a short time by Union troops as a hospital. In 1897, the home was purchased by Dr. Charles Cary, founder of Auburn University's School of Veterinary Medicine. A member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, Cary was responsible for several significant contributions to veterinary medicine and public health. The third prominent owner, U.S. Army Lieutenant General Lewis Pick, married Cary's daughter Alice. Pick was an engineer officer responsible for building the Ledo Road across northern Burma in World War II and who was the Chief of Engineers from 1949-1953. After retirement, he served as chairman of the board of Georgia Pacific Plywood Company and Head of the Board of Industrial Development for the state of Alabama. The house, located at 360 North College Street, was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1976. It now serves as the offices of the Cary Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, part of Auburn University's College of Human Sciences. Title A name given to the resource Civilian Conservation Corps in Lee County Subject The topic of the resource Lee County, AL; Great Depression; Public Works; Education; New Deal; Alabama State Parks Description An account of the resource During the 1930s two Civilian Conservation Corps groups were organized in Lee County. Post Number 4448 was located near Chewacla State Park and Post Number 4447 was located on South College Street in Auburn. Members of the Corps came from states throughout the South. From 1935-1941 Post 4448 built Chewacla State Park, including construction of a dam and lake, cabins, roads, trails, office, and bath houses. Education was a major benefit of joining the CCC. In Lee County classes were offered by Alabama Polytechnic Institute, in both the camps and on campus. One report from Post 4448 claimed that 92 percent of the men were enrolled in educational courses. The advent of World War II resulted in the closing of both CCC camps in 1941. Only a water tower and foundations remain from the camp of Post 4448. It served as a plantation in the antebellum period and as a tenant farm in the early 20th century. In 1937 J.W. Clegg applied for a farm loan under the New Deal Bankhead-Jones Act of 1937 to purchase the property. He was the first farmer from the local area to apply, and second to receive funds from this legislation. The house, located at 23385 U.S. Highway 80, was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996. Title A name given to the resource William Barnard Log Cabin (Kinnebrew-Middlebrooks-Newell House) Subject The topic of the resource Lee County, AL; Native American History; Creek Indians; Log Cabins; Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage Description An account of the resource In the early 1830s, William Barnard, a mixed-race Creek Indian, built a log cabin on 640 acres of land in what is now western Lee County. Barnard was an influential leader of the Creeks in western Georgia and served under U.S. militia general John Floyd in the First Creek War. Though he fought on the side of the United States in that conflict, Barnard was forced off of his Georgia property by the terms of subsequent treaties. The land upon which the cabin was built was granted to Barnard for his service in the First Creek War, for which he was also was granted the rank of major. Just before his death in 1833, Barnard recorded the first deed at the new Chambers County Courthouse, stipulating the division of his home, property and slaves between his twelve children upon his death. Barnard's son John, the executor of the deed, was likely defrauded of his inheritance by the court, and moved to the Indian Territory with the rest of the family. The property then passed through a succession of white owners and fell into disrepair. The cabin was donated by its last owner, Newell Floyd, to the Lee County Historical Society, of which Floyd is a member. The cabin was moved from its original site to Pioneer Park in Loachapoka, and is currently undergoing restoration. The home was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996. Located near the original site is a cemetery containing the remains of the Kinnebrew family and the site of Fort Henderson, a militia fort built to protect against Creek attacks. It was the residence of several prominent figures in the history of Auburn University. The home was leased in 1873 by Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama Treasurer E.T. Glenn. Future owner (and the home's namesake) Brigadier General James H. Lane was a revered Confederate veteran from Virginia. He rose in the ranks from Major to Brigadier General by age thirty in 1862. He was wounded three times and fought in every major battle of the Army of Northern Virginia before the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia in April 1865. It was a squad of his own men who accidentally shot Major General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863. After arriving in Auburn, Lane taught Civil Engineering, eventually becoming the Chair of the Engineering Department. General Lane purchased the home in 1884. He was also a leading figure in the establishment of the School of Engineering and the college's Corps of Cadets. The property was sold by his daughter in 1960 to Auburn University to become the site of the school's new library. In 1846, Harper deeded the land to Auburn Academy agent Simeon Porter for the purpose of building Auburn's first schools. The site served as the home of multiple educational facilities over the next 80 years including the Auburn Academy male division, East Alabama Male College Preparatory Department, the Auburn Female College, and the Auburn Grammar School. The Post Office was Auburn’s first public building and was destroyed by Federal cavalrymen during Rousseau’s Raid in July 1864. It was situated across College Avenue from where the University Chapel now stands. In 1931 the city donated the land to the federal government for the creation of a post office. Built in the 'starved classical' design, it was completed in 1933. It served as the city's post office until 1991. The city of Auburn purchased the property in 1992, renting it to the East Alabama Food Bank. After renovations it became Auburn City Hall in 2001. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as the 'Auburn Post Office.' Darden. Darden was the only physician for African-Americans within a 30-mile radius of Opelika. Partnering with his pharmacist brother J.D., he also opened a pharmacy in Opelika. During the 1940s, he ran his practice from the home, which also served as a social hub for the local African-American community, primarily through the efforts of Darden's wife Maude Jean. The city's first African-American high school, built in 1951, was named after Darden. It later merged with Opelika High School. A currently operational medical clinic and street have also been named after Darden. Notable visitors included Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and A.G. Gaston. The Dr. J.W. He talked about receiving his orders and how much he will miss the rest of the family. He agreed with her opinion of the Yankees and abolitionists, that they were trying to steal their negroes or get them to murder their owners. He then gave a graphic account of the murder of a couple in Sugar Valley. He was called on to perform the post mortem. He discussed the search for the murderers and that they will hang any abolitionists who cannot account for themselves. He said that anyone heading South should make their wills.
